THE LEARNING BUSINESS

Rethinking Just About Everything

The most important competence today is the capacity to change. Learning to change (our minds and practices) is the only means we have of keeping up with, and adapting to, the massive shifts that are occurring - in our relationships to each other and to the planet. These changes are now continuous, exponential and surprising; disrupting our lives in a variety of weird and unpredictable ways that often leave us wrong-footed. Individuals are resilient in ways that organisations are not. We can react instantly to change but organisations take time to respond. For that reason traditional learning techniques are insufficient to overcome the jolts that are tearing business-as-usual apart.

The process of organisational learning must accelerate; social media and other new technologies must be used to design and enact new knowledge faster than it is being done elsewhere. In that context the critical component we ignore at our peril is our organisation’s learning metabolism: that is the time it takes to identify, make sense, and respond intelligently to changes in the business environment. If our organisation is learn slowly, our competitors will eventually force us out of business. It is as simple as that. But if we invest in learning as a core capability, ensuring that it manifests in everything our enterprise thinks and does, we will prosper whatever happens.

OBJECTIVES:

  • In this half-day practical workshop you will be introduced to three critical concepts of enterprise learning and how these concepts can be deployed to combat today’s critical business challenges in ways that reinforces value
  • You will learn how to embrace integral thinking and apply it to your decision-making in ways that will leave competitors in your wake
  • You will discover how to integrate and transcend complex issues while amplifying and accelerating your business’s positive qualities and services in ways that automatically position your business as a market attractor
  • You will find out how you can revolutionize your planning processes so that wiser strategic decisions can be made faster and with greater resilience
  • You will be shown how you can engage all your stakeholders in networks of innovation and design that impart a critical competitive edge to everything your business does.

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Organizational learning is the only “life-critical” capability in today’s complex business environment. But so often there is a lack of investment in learning and ad hoc approaches to capturing its value. This practical workshop focuses on enhancing organizational learning in ways that ensure business resilience and organizational adaptiveness. While innovation remains the key driver for streamlining management practices, developing new products and services, and imagining entirely new markets, strategic learning coupled to ability to process and design new knowledge at speed, without amplifying risk or compromising quality, is the essential vehicle for ensuring that fresh and novel ideas are constantly generated, circulated, processed and implemented. Richard emphasizes the importance of designing an effective learning system, into which all members of the ecosystem can be invited. He also describes the use of entirely new methods (such as “change brains” and “decision theatres”) which enable complex information to be visualized and processed in real-time.

AGENDA:

  1. Learning for a change: adapting to changing conditions in a world wired for speed
  2. Social ecosystems and meshwork: distributed intelligence as a value enhancer
  3. Addicted to speed: intuition and creativity as strategic acupuncture points
  4. The viable system: using nature as a template for organizational learning
  5. Managing in real-time: strategic navigation as a distributed capability
